CP Report IW Councillor Arrested Over Alleged Sex Offences (UPDATE 3)

The CP is reporting that an IW Councillor has been arrested over alleged sex offences.

It’s policy of Hampshire police not to release the names of people who are arrested but they have told VB that a 68-year-old man from Newport, Isle of Wight, was arrested on Friday, 9 October 2009 by detectives investigating alleged offences under legislation in the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

We understand from the police that he was questioned in custody by detectives at a Island police station and then later bailed until 2 December 2009 pending further enquiries.

It hasn’t been officially confirmed who the arrested man was, but having read the County Press stating that an Isle of Wight Councillor has been arrested, we have latterly found out the details of a councillor who has been recently arrested and bailed.

UPDATE 1: Isle of Wight radio have told us that they have spoken to Cllr David Whittaker and confirmed with him that he had been arrested and bailed.

We are awaiting a statement from the Island Conservative group.

UPDATE 2: The Island Conservative group have just given us the following statement: “Cllr David Whittaker has stepped down from membership of the Conservative Group whilst police investigations into alleged offences are taking place.”
