Savoy Hotel Fire: 22 Fire-fighters Still On The Scene

Fire-fighters worked through the night to take control of the fire at the old Savoy Hotel in Sandown.

Savoy aftermathUnable to enter the building, after the Building Inspector declared the building structurally unsafe, fire-fighters had to fight the flames from outside and above, using the long ladders.

Fire control told VB this morning that there were still four pumps attending at 8am with 22 firemen on the scene.

Manager of The Tap public house, which was directly opposite the fire, told us that although the fire seemed to be under control by 12.20am, the roof collapsed at around 1.30am which sparked lots of activity once again.

At 2.47am Amanda Barsdell told us through Facebook that, “They still trying to get it under control, loads smoke.”
