MAD-Aid is a new charity that will operate on the Isle of Wight for the benefit of Disabled Children in the Republic of Moldova, who lack even the most basic facilities that most disabled children in the UK take for granted.

They have no mobility aids, and because of this, no access to education. Many are unable even to leave their homes.

‘Make a Difference’
MAD-Aid stands both for ‘Medical Aid Delivered’ and ‘Make a Difference’.

We have already identified a former medical centre in the North of Moldova that we aim to convert into a rehabilitation and respite centre.

The launch event will start with a presentation about MAD-Aid’s background and aims, and an introduction to the first project we want to undertake.

Buffet, music and raffle
The presentation will be followed by a free buffet, live music with Island Band ‘Sporting Life’, and a raffle.

The charity’s main founder, Victoria Dunford, who was born and raised in Moldova, says, “Living in the 21st century, it is hard to believe that Moldova has no facilities for its 178,984 disabled people.

“Disabled children in rural areas have no access to the education system because they have no mobility aids. Public transport has no disabled access or facilities. The society is still very much behind the times. These people are the same as us, just much less fortunate, and we are here to try to help as much as we can.”

The Island has a strong Moldavian community, many of whom will also be present, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova in the United Kingdom, Mr Iulian Fruntasu, will be joining us.

The launch takes place from 5pm on Saturday 1 September, East Cowes Town Hall.
