Students at the Clatterford Tuition Centre in Newport will open a temporary pop-up shop in town as part of a young enterprise project.

The young people have designed and produced their own products including ceramic and textile decorations and photographic Christmas cards. There are also food based products for sale such as cookie jars for Santa and decorated sweet jars.

Gaining valuable retail experience
The Christmas ‘Pop up Shop’ will allow the students to gain retail experience which will help them seek future employment opportunities.

The shop will be based at the former Island Images cafe in Newport High Street and will run from Monday 10 December until Friday 14 December. It will be open between 9.30am and 4.30pm each day, with an extended opening time until 9pm on Thursday evening.

Will encourage creative thinking
Juliet Lainson, art coordinator at Clatterford said: ‘The aim of the young enterprise project is to introduce the students to the world of commerce, develop financial management and above all encourage creative thinking.

“Ultimately selling and promoting their own products helps to develop self confidence and foster positive links with the local community.”

“A fantastic opportunity for the students”
Councillor Dawn Cousins, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for children’s services and education said: “Young Enterprise is a fantastic opportunity for the students, an opportunity they may not otherwise be able to access.

“Clatterford has built a strong reputation for community art projects and I am sure this new pop-up shop venture which prove just as popular’.
