Hospital friends pay for additional hospital scanner

Thanks to George for this update from the Friends of St Mary’s. Ed

There is no need any more for the three continence nurse/advisors based at St Mary’s Hospital to juggle the use of their portable bladder scanners.

Now thanks to the Friends agreeing to pay £9,942 for a third scanner each has one of their own.

“It is absolutely fantastic that the Friends have helped us in this way, it’s just what we needed,” said continence nurse specialist Angela Rawsthorn.

Wide usage of scanners
The scanners are used not just in the hospital, but in outside clinics, people’s homes, and nursing and residential homes.

The battery operated scanners ascertain just how much residual urine is left in the bladder after voiding. The process can prevent catheterisation.

The ages of those who have recently benefitted from the scanners have ranged from 17 to 106.
