Niton residents win right for road salting

The campaigning of Niton residents to have the main road that links them to Newport have won a victory – to have this frequently-used road gritted when other major Island roads are done.

Other roads that residents have been concerned about – Military Road, Bleak Down and Undercliff Drive (the CP tweeted) – will, as predicted have to wait for treatment until the PFI scheme comes in, in effect next winter.

Niton came together
Campaigner and parish councillor Jonathan Young, who with village grocer Wayne Norris organised the 550-name petition, said: “This is stunningly good news, and just shows what can be achieved when people in a village like Niton come together and speak with one voice.”

“This was never a political campaign, it was a village campaign. We’re grateful to everyone who supported us, and to the Council for doing the right thing.”

Slow movement
Up until now, the council has refused to reconsider, despite the issue being raised in December 2012 and a number of car crashes have occurred since.

Update: 22:56 Added link to CP Tweet about which roads would be treated under PFI.
23:20 Removed Bleak Down from list of wait-for-PFI roads, after Jonathan Young’s comment.
