Letter: Watch out for the Spare Room Tax

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with readers. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch. This one from Island resident Chris Wallis. Ed

Dear Sirs

In a few short days from 1st April a terrible tragedy will befall the working age tenants of social housing.

I refer you to the Social Welfare Union Website which sets out the forthcoming tsunami.

There is no doubt that downsizing property is either non-existent or in very short supply and is worse here in the Isle of Wight. Therefore a stark ‘fait accompli’ will destroy the incomes of the vulnerable, disabled and poor of the Isle of Wight as deductions of either 14 or 25% are made to Housing Benefit at source, in addition to the reductions to Council Tax benefit of at least 10%.

Whilst it might not be fashionable to write about or highlight these issues due to government spin, an awful lot of reasonable honest and hard working people will have their lives turned upside down by this measure.
