Ground movement damage on Ventnor roads to be tackled

The Isle of Wight Council has today taken measures to improve safety for motorists on two roads that have been affected by recent ground movement.

Part of Newport Road in Ventnor near Ocean View Drive will have temporary lights installed this weekend where movement has made the slope across the road difficult for high-sided vehicles.

The council has closed the side of the highway where the slope is most extreme and vehicles will travel on the opposite side of the road for the foreseeable future. Works to shore up a retaining wall and repair cracks in the adjoining footway will take place next week.

Undercliff Drive
On the Undercliff Drive, cracks in the road have emerged near to the property ‘Woodlands’. Traffic had been restricted to one side of the road although further cracks have developed creating an uneven road surface, which is particularly difficult for motorcyclists.

The council has instructed contractors to level the road surface and repair the cracks that have formed as a matter of urgency to ensure that the road can be kept open to traffic. Following investigations at the affected road this afternoon (8 March) it is necessary to close the road between St Catherine’s Road and Seven Sisters Road (Western junction) from 4.30pm. This closure is likely to be in place until 1pm on Monday 11 March.

Motorists are asked to take care when using both roads.
