Newport Road Ventnor

Why has Newport Road been partially closed for two weeks with no work carried out?

Southern Vectis have reported delays and disruption to their route 3 service through Upper Ventnor today. They say that due to an emergency road closure made by the Isle of Wight council, all route 3 buses will be diverted, not serving Wroxall and Upper Ventnor.

Ventnor residents will be aware that over two weeks ago, the council placed temporary traffic lights at the junction of Ocean View Road and Newport Road, Ventnor.

Partial road closure but no works
A partial road closure has in place since and work was, the council stated, due to start week commencing 11th March.

According to residents, two weeks later, no work has taken place.

Temporary light stolen
However, on Friday night/Saturday morning thieves stole one of the set of the temporary lights, leading to traffic safety problems for those using the road.

Later on Saturday the road cones and second set of lights were moved to the side of the road so traffic could move in both directions at the same time.

Residents are now asking why the missing lights weren’t simply replaced on Saturday morning.

Southern Vectis say the road closure will be in place for three days. We awaiting further information from the council and will update you once we hear more.

Notice from Southern Vectis
Due to an emergency road closure by the Isle of Wight Council in Upper Ventnor for three days, all route 3 buses will not serve Upper Ventnor at all. Route 3 buses will be diverted from Godshill via Scotland Corner, Whitwell and Pine Point and Upper Gills Cliff Road to rejoin the normal route. The diversion will operate in both directions.

Godshill itself will not be served beyond Scotland Corner by route 3.

We are planning to operate a shuttle bus from 7am until 7pm between St Francis Primary School in Upper Ventnor as far as Shanklin via Whiteley Bank with an hourly service. This is unlikely to be in place until 1pm on Monday.

These roadworks may also affect school buses that operate through Upper Ventnor.
