Oxfam book shop staff:

Oxfam Books and Music shop to celebrate first birthday

Thanks to Rowan news of this first anniversary party being held in Newport over the weekend. Ed

This weekend is a special occasion for the staff and volunteers at Newport’s Oxfam Books & Music Shop in St. Thomas Square – it’s the first Anniversary of the opening of the shop.

Three for two sale
To mark the event, they’ll be saying thank you to the Island’s customers and donors on the 22nd and 23rd June, with a 3-for-2 sale offer on most items and plenty of goodies to nibble, including homemade cakes and Oxfam’s own fair trade chocolate.

Of course, no birthday party can be without a birthday cake, and one has very kindly been donated by Sainsbury so come along early to make sure you grab a slice before it’s all gone!

“First year has been amazing”
Rowan Baylis, Manager (at left in the photo), said,

“Our first year has been amazing. We were all sad when the original Oxfam bookshop in Ryde closed, but the success in Newport has been beyond our best hopes.

Along with my Deputy, Alison Todd, I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all our customers and donors, and the wonderful Oxfam volunteers who’ve worked so hard to see the new shop go from strength to strength.”

Donations appreciated
With times so tough, the sheer generosity of the people of the Island in their donations is a constant source of inspiration.

“We regularly have donors who know their collections of books and records are valuable who, rather than sell them privately, are determined to see them raise as much money as possible to help people in need. It really is quite humbling.”

Along with its shop in St. Thomas Square, Oxfam Books & Music also runs a thriving Internet business where the donated items reach a worldwide market.

Rowan says,

“We’re always looking for new volunteers who can bring their skills and experience to the team.

“For instance, we receive really exciting donations of vintage books and music, much of which needs some research before it can go on sale, while in our On-Line Shop we’re even selling clothes and accessories – which might seem odd for a bookshop, but is proving is proving a huge success!”
