The Wightlink Islanders pairing of Tom Perry and Ben Hopwood go into the National League Pairs Championship meeting at Mildenhall tomorrow (Sunday) in confident mood and the club’s co-promoter Chris Hunt firmly believes that they have the talent and ability to win the meeting.

“Indeed they have, but obviously Mildenhall’s pair will be the pre-meeting favourites to win on their own circuit.

“One mistake or engine failure though can effectively put paid to any of the pairings title aspirations and all the pressure will be on the Mildenhall pairing of Dan Halsey and Josh Bates as everyone will be expecting them to win.

“Tom and Ben then go into the meeting with everything to gain and nothing to lose and both are determined to give it all they’ve got in a bid to cause something of an upset.”

The eight competing clubs have been separated into two qualifying groups of four with us being drawn in Group A against King’s Lynn, Dudley and Stoke. Each pair races against the other three in the group and the two highest pairings will progress through to the knockout semi-finals and final against the top two pairs from Group B.

That Group B sees Mildenhall’s pair having to face up to Kent, Coventry and Buxton and the meeting gets underway at West Row at 4.30pm.
