Rural broadband decision goes back to Cabinet

Since Cabinet members deferred their decision last month on whether to approve BT as the preferred bidder for the roll-out of rural broadband on the Isle of Wight, there has been an incredibly well-informed debate taking place through OnTheWight.

Readers will remember we ran an open letter from the head of BT’s Next Generation Access in response to Simon’s open letter to Cabinet members. The BT letter has attracted some interesting arguments for an against BT winning the contract with 115 comments lodged so far.

Decision before Cabinet members
As before, officers are still recommending that Cabinet members approve the decision to appoint BT, but whether a consensus can be reached won’t be known until next week’s meeting.

Unlike the former Conservative Cabinet, which rarely saw officers’ recommendations being rejected, the new Cabinet seem to be more determined to thoroughly consider all options before making a decision, even if this means delaying a decision.
