Frank James Pillar on truck

Refuse truck causes damage to historic Frank James pillar

Thanks to the several readers who have been in touch this morning about an incident at the former Frank James Hospital in East Cowes.

We’re told that around 10.15am this morning on the junction of Adelaide Grove and Hospital Road, a refuse vehicle from Island Waste reversed into one of the historic Frank James Hospital wall pillars.

Extensive damage to historic pillar
As you can see from the photos (thanks Daryl and Vidya), the top of the pillar was knocked off. It’s now been removed, care of an Isle of Wight Compost vehicle and crane.

Given the site is Grade II listed (we’re not sure whether that extends to the wall) it’s likely to be a costly restoration.

We’ve contacted Island Waste for a comment and are awaiting their response – which we’ll add here once they get back to us.

Thanks to OnTheWight reader, Daryl, for sending through photos.
