Speedway: Third time lucky for Wightlink Islanders?

Thanks to Bryn for this update. Ed

Following a waterlogged track causing the postponement of the first attempt to stage it last Wednesday, a second attempt was made to run the meeting Sunday afternoon, but sadly the British weather was the only winner again.

Things looked promising as both sides arrived and warmed their bikes up in the pits in readiness for the action to begin at the scheduled time of 3.30pm, only for rain to start to fall and it was announced that there would be a short delay to the start of the meeting.

It was hoped that it was a case of a passing shower, but the rainfall got heavier and heavier waterlogging the racing circuit again leaving no possibility of the riders safely being able to race their highly tuned 500cc motorcycles with no brakes upon it.

Joint team manager Chris Hunt after the decision was announced,

“It was so frustrating, but the referee really had no option than to rule that the match couldn’t go ahead, particularly as conditions were okay prior to the rain beginning to fall.

“Hopefully the match will go ahead on Wednesday for dates to re-stage the meeting and then the two legs of the final against Dudley are fast running out with the end of the speedway season on the 30th October looming.”
