Thanks to Linda for this update from the Ventnor Film Society. Ed

Ventnor Film Society returns on Tuesday 4th February with its Spring Season of British and World Cinema.

Now in its second year at Ventnor Arts Club, the Society has put together an interesting programme of recent award winning films from the UK, Italy, Chile, Denmark, Japan and Saudi Arabia.

This season has a good mix of thrillers, drama, comedy, romance, social commentary and historical drama, in English and in the original languages with subtitles.

First screening
Starting the season is the winner of this year’s Cannes Jury Prize Like Father, Like Son, from the Japanese director of I Wish. Successful architect and family man Ryota has the perfect life until he learns that his son was swapped at birth and now lives with a lower-class but caring family of shopkeepers.

As he faces the life-changing decision of choosing between his natural son and the boy he has raised, he begins to ask himself what sort of father he has really been. This warm-hearted and poignant film is another authentic and captivating portrayal of children and family life.

Fantastic variety of films
We are also pleased to be showing Wadjda, the first feature film to be made in Saudi Arabia, and by a female director, an important yet appealing comedy-drama about the role of women in a male dominated society.

We have two very different Danish Films starring Mads Mikkelsen, a tense thriller, The Hunt and A Royal Affair.

The Great Beauty is a splendid visual tour around the sights of Rome, whilst the Chilean Gloria is a funny, sad and romantic tale of love the second time around. Our final two films of the season are British offerings, The Selfish Giant and the latest Ken Loach film, The Angels’ Share.

Details of the films can be found with OnTheWight’s event listings and on posters around the town, but there is also our own Website with full details of all films and links to reviews and trailers.

Book ahead
Ventnor Film Society meets in the Ventnor Arts Club, which offers comfortable seating and HD projection. The venue has become very popular and as we have more viewers than in previous years, it is essential to reserve a seat by emailing [email protected].

Screenings take place on alternate Tuesdays at 7.30pm and latecomers are not admitted. Entrance is £5 payable at the door and is not necessary to be a member of the Arts Club to attend. Doors open at 6.30pm.

People tend to meet up in the bar for drinks or to sample the club chef’s light snacks before the film and stay on afterwards to chat. We hope to welcome new faces as well as old friends to our Spring Season.
