RIBA South award 2014: Isle of Wight house shortlisted (Photos)

A new-build house in Ryde has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South awards.

The house won the Isle of Wight RIBA new-build award last April and now has a chance to compete at a regional level.

Judges on the Island this week
The panel of judges visited the Island earlier this week to take a good look around the building, the first in their tour that will also visit 20 other shortlisted buildings dotted around the South.

OnTheWight spoke to Ian Crane who led the project team at Fletcher Crane Architects, the practice the clients (Ryde residents) selected after six architectural practices were invited to pitch for the work.

“While it’s unashamedly modern, it re-captures Ryde’s golden Victorian age – when people commissioned buildings that added to ‘the whole’ of the area. I think buildings like this move Ryde forward,” Ian told OnTheWight, he continued, “The building was designed to bring in all available light – using floor to ceiling windows. Pretty much every room has a view out over the Solent.”

Best of luck to the family – who already lived on the Island, before commissioning this house – and to Fletcher Crane Architects, a relatively young practice.

Last year, another Ryde building, at Ryde School, won a RIBA South award.
