Undercliff works taken close to the ground - SRP

No date given for continuation of works on Undercliff Drive

Following the devastating landslip that took place on Undercliff Drive in February, stabilisation works being carried out by John Peck on behalf of highways PFI contractor, Island Roads, had to come to a halt.

A section of the road was closed in November 2013 to enable the works to take place.

Following the landslip in February, John Peck Ltd have now removed their machinery and site office from Undercliff Drive. This has led to some residents being under the impression they’d been sacked from the job.

Contract has not been terminated
Island Roads have confirmed today that the contract with John Peck “has not been terminated”.

The say,

“Works at Undercliff Drive have been suspended due to the ground conditions until further notice.

“The Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads are continuing to carry out additional monitoring along Undercliff Drive and the surrounding areas to measure any ground movement.”

Waiting for ground to dry out
On when the works would recommence, Island Roads said,

“Until the ground has dried out and all available data can be considered in detail, Island Roads are not in a position to make a decision on future access along this road and whether the works in Undercliff Drive will be continued.”

It’s thought locally that the heavy rain from February is still working its way through the Undercliff and has not yet drained out from the cliffs above.
