Undercliff landslip: Reports produced by Island Roads rejected by council as ‘confusing’

Earlier in the month, residents evacuated from Undercliff Drive, St Lawrence, following at least two landslips, told OnTheWight they felt they were being kept in the dark over the situation.

In the same week of publishing our report, the Head of Planning, Bill Murphy, told residents a report being produced by Island Roads into the circumstances of the road collapse was due to be submitted to the council on 20th May.

Reports considered to be confusing
Residents have this week been informed that although three reports being produced by Island Roads – one covering the section from Seven Sisters to St Catherine’s Road, one covering the area subject to work by Island Roads at Woodlands and the other covering the area subject to work by Island Roads at Undercliff Glen Caravan Park – were delivered to the Isle of Wight council on 20th May as planned, the reports “needed a number of alterations” and have been returned to Island Roads.

Officers considered that parts of the reports were too confusing. The revised documents were due to be published today, but residents have now been informed they’ll not be able to see them until next week.

Residents perplexed
One resident evacuated from the area in February told OnTheWight,

“If Island Roads were capable of being contracted to deal with the Undercliff Drive’s problems, surely they are capable of writing a report.”

Further clarification likely
Bill Murphy advised that having seen the reports, it’s likely the council will have to go back to Island Roads for further clarifications on parts of the reports.

Officers will be meeting with Island Roads late next week.
