ASDA reveal dates for new supermarket in Newport

As reported last night, the Planning Committee spent over four hours deliberating planning applications from ASDA and South Coast Leisure for out of town supermarkets in St George’s Way, Newport.

Both applications were approved, but don’t get too excited just yet, it could be almost two and a half years before a supermarket on the site opens.

Timetable for opening
Following the decision-making, Doug Wilson, Head of UK Property Communications, ASDA told OnTheWight,

“We are delighted that the Council’s Planning Committee has approved our planning application for a new ASDA store on St George’s Way. We will look to begin work on the site later this year with a view to opening the new store in late 2016, early 2017.

“We have already begun discussions with Job Centre Plus as to how ASDA’s recruitment programme can support the Island’s employment and training priorities and we expect to meet with other Island groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the trader and tourist organisations as we work on the finer details of the store’s delivery.

“We have had great support from the local community throughout the planning process and we would like to thank everyone for all of their efforts on our behalf. We are very much looking forward to coming to the Island.”
