Ryde Harriers’ Midsummer race popular again

Midsummer is marked by Ryde Harriers with their annual ten mile road race and this year a hot evening welcomed 11 club competitors plus 15 guests to the two-lap course that took in Seaview and the best part of Ryde Esplanade.

The championship trophy can only be won by a club member, so although the first runner home was the race was won by Pete Norris in a time of 1.04.29, the men’s champion was Simon McMorran in 1.04.48 as the first Harrier home.

First Vet 60 and second male Harrier was Graham Maitland 1.18.00 with third male Harrier and first vet 40 Rowland Silito in a time of 1.19.40.

First woman was a Harrier though and Sarah Kavanagh retained the trophy, coming in seventh overall in 1.15.06. Second female Harrier was Elaine Parry, running in her first ever ten mile race, she completed the course in 1.27.18 as the first Vet 35 just ahead of third female Harrier Abi Cooke in 1.28.12.

More recent club night events included a 3,000m on the track won by Les Cupis in 11.34 with Sarah Kavanagh second in 11.43 and Grace Crumplin third with a time of 12.03.

The next road race is the Isle of Wight Half Marathon on Sunday 17th August which is being run in conduction with Isle of Wight Youth Trust who are organising a 5k charity fun run from the same venue. More details from both organisations sites.
