Gurnard development:

Almost 500 residents object to 86 dwelling development

Members of the planning committee will be taking part in a site visit tomorrow (Friday) for a proposed development of 86 dwellings in Gurnard.

Officers have recommended ‘conditional permission’ on the application which has received enormous opposition from residents.

There are a whopping 481 letters of objection to the development which, if approved, would comprise

  • 10 x 1 bedroom houses
  • 23 x 2 bedroom houses
  • 9 x 2 bedroom bungalows
  • 22 x 3 bedroom houses
  • 14 x 3 bedroom bungalows
  • 8 x 4 bedroom houses

30 of the proposed 86 units would be affordable housing.

Widespread opposition
Objection to the development comes not just from residents, but also town and parish councils.

Papers for Tuesday’s planning committee meeting state

Gurnard Parish Council object to the application on the grounds that there is no evidential need for 99 dwellings

Northwood Parish Council objects to the application on the adverse effects on Northwood, settlement coalescence and overdevelopment

Cowes Town Council objects to the application on the grounds that the application would result in the loss of a green area and would set an unacceptable precedent of the closing the “green gap” between Cowes and the village of Gurnard.

The Badger Trust object to the proposed development on the grounds that it would have a detrimental effect on wildlife through loss of habitat and foraging sites and questioning the need for the proposed level of housing.

Gurnard Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group object to the application on several grounds

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) also object on several grounds

Island Watch have objected to the application as this is a greenfield site outside of the development envelope and therefore represents creeping urbanisation rather than sustainable planning.

Planning committee members will be making a visit to the proposed site of the development on Friday morning ahead of the committee meeting on Tuesday.

The application will be heard at County Hall from 4pm and members of the public are welcome to attend.
