The 200th birthday of Ryde Pier – the UK’s oldest – is to be celebrated in style with a free party hosted by Wightlink on Sunday.

As well as providing a fun celebration of one of the Island’s best known landmarks, the event at the top of the Pier will also raise money for two Island charities – Ryde Inshore Rescue and Cassie’s Care 4 Pets charity which helps older people pay the full costs of vets’ bills.

Celebrating the Pier’s historic past
It is the fourth Party on the Pier organised by Wightlink and with fair weather predicted and a range of activities in store, it is hoped the event will be the best yet. Many of the attractions have been arranged to reflect the pier’s historic past.

Sam Woodman, Wightlink’s Partnerships & Events Manager said,

“There will be something new and different happening all day long, from a ‘Royal’ visit and performing magicians to costume workshops, stilt walking and a fire show.

“There will also be face painting, Punch & Judy, carnival creation, fairground rides, a hall of mirrors and a few classic cars as well as foodstalls, ice cream and gift stalls, hog roast, Pimms tent, Champagne and strawberries bar and a pop-up real Ale tavern.

“We have assembled an event that reflects the history of the Pier and we have also worked hard with the Island community including Ryde Business Association to ensure that local entertainers and suppliers are at the very heart of the event.”

The event will close with a Last Night of the Proms extravaganza with Simon Wheeler.

The event takes place between 11am and 9.30pm and all are welcome.
