Don’t miss the start of the Ventnor Film Society Autumn Season

Thanks to Linda from the Ventnor Film Society for this reminder of the new season of screenings. Ed

Ventnor Film Society returns on Tuesday 9th September with its Autumn Season of British and World Cinema.

The Society continues to meet in Ventnor Arts Club, and has put together an exciting programme of recent award winning films from the UK, Japan, Belgium, Iran, Australia, Iceland, Ireland and India. This programme has a good mix of drama, comedy, romance, travel and animation, in English and in the original languages with subtitles.

Opening with Grand Budapest Hotel
Our opening film this season is the worldwide box-office success Grand Budapest Hotel, a comedy starring Ralph Fiennes.

Set in a grand hotel in 1932 this is the story of the concierge Gustave and his friend the lobby boy Zero. When a wealthy widow mysteriously dies and leaves Gustave a priceless painting, battle is joined with the aggrieved family.

A frantic chase ensues involving a prison sentence, clashes with fascist thugs and a wild ski chase.

Wide variety of films
We are also pleased to be showing the acclaimed Irish drama Calvary, the story of a priest who is told he will die in seven days.

From India comes a delightful romantic comedy, The Lunchbox, where two people are brought together through a mistake by the Mumbai lunch delivery service.

We will explore contrasting landscapes with the Australian Tracks, the true story of Robyn Davidson’s trek across the Outback with a dog and four camels and Of Horses and Men, set in a frozen Icelandic valley.

The Past, tells of Iranian Ahmad who returns to Paris to finalise his divorce but finds himself caught up the secrets and lies of his past. A heart-wrenching drama, Broken Circle Breakdown from Belgium is a love story set against a soundtrack of bluegrass music. Our last film of the season will be The Wind Rises, the final masterpiece from the Japanese animator, Miyazaki, the story of Jiro who dreams of designing and flying beautiful aircraft.

Details of all the films can be found on Events OnTheWight and on posters around the town, but there is also our own website with full details of all films and links to reviews and trailers.

Where and when
Ventnor Film Society meets in the Ventnor Arts Club, 13 High Street, Ventnor, which offers comfortable seating and HD projection.

The venue has become very popular and as we have more viewers than in previous years, it is essential to reserve a seat by emailing [email protected].

Screenings take place on alternate Tuesdays at 7.30pm and latecomers are not admitted. Entrance is £5 payable at the door and is not necessary to be a member of the Arts Club to attend.

Doors open at 6.30pm. People tend to meet up in the bar before the film and some stay on afterwards to chat. We hope to welcome new faces as well as old friends to our Autumn Season.
