‘Disappointing’ drop in GCSE results at Carisbrooke College

GCSE results at Carisbrooke College did not come in as predicted which disappointed Headteacher Peter Shaw, who commented,

“In all of our regular and hugely positive interactions with Ofsted inspection teams and officers from Hampshire Local Authority this academic year, every indicator supported our projection that we would build slightly on last year’s 9% increase in the 5A*-C including English and Maths indicator, but we have fallen short of that, recording 29%.

“Ofqual have confirmed that over 41% of schools nationally dropped in English by over 10% and we experienced considerable volatility this year in that particular subject. Whilst that is not the only issue, it has certainly contributed significantly to this performance, alongside some unexpected outcomes in some other subjects.”

Special Measures exit “a hard journey”
Chair of Governors, Terence Hart, said,

“Peter and his team have always known that our progress out of Special Measures would be a hard journey and this unexpected dip in our results only strengthens further our resolve to make things better.

“All those associated with the school recognise that teaching, attendance, behaviour and leadership have improved immeasurably in the last 18 months and this progress has been repeatedly corroborated externally. It is clear that more time is needed for the intended impact of all the good work going on to be realised in our exam results.

“It is disappointing for the school and our students and we are urgently analysing the detail to determine what further actions we need to take moving forward.”

Some excellent improvements
Peter Shaw continued,

“Behind the headline statistics, it is vital to acknowledge that there were some excellent improvements recorded in Physics, French, Health and Social Care and Textiles. Our challenge now is to make those improvements universal.

“There is a tremendous amount of hard work going on at all levels in Carisbrooke College from a team of dedicated professionals determined to make things better and we are confident that we will see a vastly different picture this time next year.”
