Busy time for Ryde Harriers running teams

Ryde Harriers supplied the only Island team with an all-male contingent of four athletes who all managed excellent performances with a quartet of personnel bests. First home for the Harriers was Rod Parker in 34:01, a superb time for Rod as he continues his return from long-term injury.

Club captain Pete Still came next in 34:29 followed by Brian Warren in 38:18 with John Randles the final Harrier home in 43:49. Next HRRL event is the Victory 5 on Sunday 14th September in Portsmouth.

After two months of split events at Ryde and Sandown, the Harriers had a large attendance for the first event back together at from Ryde Rowing Club last Tuesday. The nominated run of 6.5 miles took in a loop past Smallbrook Stadium, along Green Lane and Harding Shute before the drag back up Beaper and the fast downhill finish of Appley Lane.

Thirty members took part, although anther fifteen took part in shorter routes, and it was Graham Skelley who took maximum points with his finish time only five seconds away from his nomination. Second place went to a cruising Daniel Murphy with Pete White in third. Fastest on the night were Simon Newman for the men (44.48) and Julie King (47.56) for the women.

This weekend is the annual IW fell running series in Ventnor. There are three races over Saturday and Sunday with entries accepted on the day. More details are available from www.rydeharriers.co.uk and race HQ is St. Catherine’s School.
