Fallen sailors remembered at First World War Commemoration

Thanks to Ed Gouge from the Ventnor First World War Commemoration Committee for news of this event. Ed

Following the First World War commemoration event in August, the Ventnor Royal British Legion are holding short ceremonies to commemorate those in the services who died during the war.

The first will be at the War Memorial, Park Avenue on Monday 22 September at 11am to commemorate the deaths of three sailors who died when their ship, the HMS Aboukir, was sunk by a German U boat in September 1914, the first Ventnor people to die in the war.

Albert Colenut was a stoker, John Symmons was a gunner and the youngest, Alan Robertson was only 15 years old.

The Sea Cadets will lay crosses and standards will be present from the services.

All welcome.
