Tragedy as friends see car go over edge of cliff

The Coroner’s Court heard today of the tragic death of an Isle of Wight man, who last week died after his car went over the cliff by the Old Blackgang Road, Niton.

Mark Weekes was named locally not long after the incident occurred on Thursday evening last week, but his full name of Mark Brian Weekes, aged 42, was confirmed today at the Court.

All the emergency services were involved in what was originally thought to be a rescue, but was soon realised to be a fatal incident.

Friends witnessed cliff-fall
The County Press reports the Court heard how concerned friends of Mr Weekes witnessed his car going over the cliff. They’d approached his car, but then heard the engine start and saw him drive over the edge of the cliff.

Mr Weekes was not wearing a seatbelt and died of multiple injuries. The Inquest was adjourned until 20th January 2015.

Our thoughts go out to Mark’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
