Isle of Wight junior sailor, Haydn Sewell, Bermuda bound

Haydn, age 12, was selected as the sole British sailor to make the trip to Bermuda and will join 13 other young sailors from all over the globe to race against the local Optimist sailors.

Royal Bermuda Yacht Club
The Junior Gold Cup is part of a week long event run by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club that will see the Optimist sailors rubbing shoulders with some of the worlds very best sailing talent competing in the Argo Group Bermuda Gold cup, part of the World Match Racing Tour. This includes among other British Olympic gold medallist and Americas Cup sailor Iain Percy.

Well supported
Commenting on the his forthcoming trip Haydn said,

“I’m so excited, it’s going be awesome going to and sailing in Bermuda against some amazing optimist sailors from around the world and locally. It’s going to be great being there at the same time as so many top sailors too.

“I’m so lucky that I have the support of the Royal London Yacht Club, the Isle of Wight Council talented athlete scheme, Crewsaver and my school, Christ the King which means I can go.”

Busy month
Haydn’s trip follows a busy month of training and racing for him during which he won the Spinnaker Optimist Open Regatta and took the prize as the highest placed junior and came second in the RYA South Zone Championships.

Before he sets off to Bermuda Haydn will compete in the Optimist End of Season Championship, the last event of the year which counts towards the annual British rankings, in which he hope to improve on his current position of 7th.
