Looking west on Undercliff Drive - Island Roads staff

Page set up on Facebook to show support for Undercliff Drive residents

A new Facebook Page calling on Islanders to show their support for the residents of Undercliff Drive has been created.

The page has already attracted almost 500 Likes and the creator is hoping to use the social networking site to spread news of the plight of the Undercliff Drive residents as far and wide as possible.

Volunteers built new section of road
This time last weekend, after eight months of frustration at no practical action being taken by Island Roads or the Isle of Wight council to reinstate vehicle access to the landlocked homes, a group of Islanders got together to help rebuild a small section of the landslipped road.

This is the section of road to the west of the caravan park and the one that residents have been forced to walk along to access their homes.

Took five days for Island Road to notice
It wasn’t until Thursday this week that Island Roads had noticed that work had taken place.

Within 24 hours, they’d placed water barriers across the entrance to the road, denying the residents access to their homes in their cars.

Overwhelming support from Islanders
The response from Islanders to the news of the road being built by volunteers, Island Roads threatening to close it, and then actually blocking access has been incredible.

The articles published by OnTheWight have reached over 55,000 people on Facebook, with overwhelming support for the residents being talked about.

The move by Island Roads yesterday afternoon has meant that deliveries of heating oil and LPG can now not take place, leaving residents – whose lives have been a living hell for the last eight months – in a devastating position as winter approaches.
