Incredible year for Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club

Thanks to Alex for this latest news from Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club. Ed

Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club’s incredible 2014 was drawn to a close, with the presentation of their two Hants and Dorset Championships at the annual Association Dinner and Dance in Southampton.

The evening saw Joe Evans Murray and Alex Robertson collect their shield for winning the Men’s Junior Pair championship, the duo dominated this years event, gaining ten points, only dropping two points all season.

It is now the second time in five years the club have won this event. Alex Robertson also collected the Men’s Junior Sculls championship goblet, after also dominating his category, taking home nine of a possible twelve points from the regatta series.

One of the busiest years in its history
For the club, 2014 has been one of the busiest years in its history. With building work finishing on the new boathouse facility, the facility was opened in April by the club’s very own Olympic Gold medallist Louis Attrill.

Following this structural triumph, the club have had their most successful season on the water for over a decade, winning two Hants and Dorset Championships, collecting twenty eight wins, that contribute to the fifty eight podium places achieved.

The club has attended twenty events (that is twenty weekends of the year!) putting over 35 rowers on the water.

The club has not seen racing membership of this number in many years, and is not only a testament to an increasing sporting mentality in the country, but to our own volunteer coaches, and the club committee, who work to keep improving our facilities.

Looking forward
2015 promises to continue the club’s drive forward, with further development plans for the rowing facilities, and an ever increasing group of competitive and social rowers at the club.
