Fix my street screen grab:

Who is dumping asbestos on our beautiful Island?

Fix My Street is a brilliant, free to use Website that allows residents to report problems to local authorities

You can report potholes, flytipping, over-grown hedges, anything that is causing a problem that the local authority should be aware of.

Increase in flytipping?
Keeping an eye on the number of reports posted to the site, OnTheWight had the impression there’d been a noticeable increase in the incidents of reported flytipping.

One of the most recent reports was added by Mike Broom, who reports “Asbestos builders’ waste dumped in Whale chine car park”.

Other examples include fridges, sofas and an astonishing 16 computer monitors (over a period of time) near Smallbrook Stadium.

Levels of flytipping always this high
We got in touch with the council to see whether there had actually been an increase.

A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight council replied,

“I have spoken to relevant officers and there has been no significant increases in the number of flytipping reports made to the council. Please note that some reports made via ‘Fix My Street’ may be referring to the same incident of waste being dumped.”

In respect of the asbestos, it was good to hear that the council were swift to remove it Friday morning.
