Supermarket up for sale, but who will take it over? (updated)

Southern Co-operative, who own the large Co-op supermarket in Terminus Road, Cowes, have confirmed it looking to sell the branch.

A spokesperson for the supermarket told OnTheWight,

“The Southern Co-operative is in discussion with another operator regarding the sale of its Terminus Road store, Cowes. We are unable to disclose more at this stage due to confidentiality agreements.

“We continually review our portfolio of stores to ensure we offer the very best service to our customers, closely tailored to local demand. Our retail strategy remains focused on growing our core estate of neighbourhood convenience stores alongside a select number of community stores in village and market town locations, and we opened 14 new stores across southern England in 2014.

“Continuity of employment would be assured for all colleagues working at the Terminus Road store as they all have the opportunity to transfer to a new employer under the Transfer Undertaking for the Protection of Employment Regulations (TUPE).”

Denials from other supermarkets
This afternoon Tesco have confirmed to the CP they have no plans to open a branch in Cowes.

OnTheWight has been in touch with Sainsbury’s to find out whether it is they who are looking to take over the branch and provide a larger store than they currently have in Cowes. We’ll let you know once we hear more.

Update 14.37
Sainsbury’s confirm they are not looking at anything in that location.
