Improvements needed at primary school says Ofsted

St Francis Primary School in Ventnor has received its second Section 8 monitoring visit from Ofsted since it found the school to require improvement in September 2013.

The visit focused on pupils’ achievement over the last year and how effectively leaders monitor teaching and pupils’ progress.

The report states that “Senior leaders and governors are not taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the last section 5 inspection and plans are not sharply focused on rapidly bringing about improvement”.

Disadvantaged pupils
The inspector found the gap between achievement of disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils at the school is too large and needs attention.

The report states that unvalidated results for 2014 showed that disadvantaged pupils in Year 6 were over a year behind the non-disadvantaged pupils in the school.

Role of Governors
It goes on to say that Governors at the school hold the view “the school is improving and well on the way to being judged good, but as there are weaknesses in how data, teaching and, particularly, pupils’ progress, are monitored”.

The Inspector reports their doubts as to “how they know this view is accurate” and goes on to add that . No members of the governing body attended the training on governance, in January 2014, organised by Hampshire local authority in conjunction with Her Majesty’s Inspectors.
