Appley WI hear stories from ’round the world’ sailors

Thanks to Judith for sharing this latest report from Appley Women’s Insitute (WI). Ed

Sally Hope, assisted by Richard, entertained Appley WI with stories from their ’70s adventure when they sailed from the Solent across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They were accompanied by their three children on the extended voyage in one of the first catamarans to reach New Zealand.

It was fascinating to hear of the islands and peoples they visited. Whilst the perils of the journey were not emphasised, although they heard the explosion and witnessed the mushroom cloud accompanying a French nuclear test, it was agreed how resilient they had had to be.

Jerusalem rouses the meeting
The meeting had opened with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem after a remembrance of the contributions of Barbara Hill by Anne Longford.

Two new members were welcomed. The minutes of the last meeting and treasurers report were accepted and signed.

The produce prepared by Appley members raised £126 at the WI Federation Christmas Fair.

The Best Bloom was Joy Wade’s camellia and Jenny Holgate won the competition with a detailed paper boat.
