The newly-built and decorated facility includes a bedroom area, lounge, kitchenette, shower room and toilet to enable families or relatives to stay overnight or make use of the facilities during the day. The suite is also stocked with overnight essentials such as toothpaste; toothbrushes and shower gel, and refreshments to provide additional home comforts.

Built as part of the SURE project, it provides a much-needed, flexible space for visiting families and relatives, some of whom come from the mainland and have nowhere to stay on the Island. Prior to this facility being built, the Hospice was able to offer a bedroom space but with only basic facilities.

A separate quiet room has also been created for families and visitors in need of somewhere for a moment of reflection or quiet time together, with comfortable sofas and chairs in calm surroundings.

Both facilities, which have just opened, have already been put to good use by relatives of those staying on the wards.

Healthcare Assistant Denese Delandro said:

“The new facilities will make a huge difference not just to those families and relatives that have come to spend time with family members but to their loved ones as well. Knowing they can stay close by and spend vital time with each other can be a source of immense comfort for both.”
