Community beds at Solent Grange completely separate from ‘Inadequate’ care home say NHS

Last month the Isle of Wight NHS Trust reported they would be setting up 13 ‘in the community beds’ at Solent Grange care home in Newport.

A week later or so later, the CQC published their latest inspection report for the care home and deemed it ‘Inadequate’.

Following concerns from a reader, OnTheWight got in touch with the IW NHS for their comment on the rating. A spokesperson for the IW NHS Trust told us,

“Following the CQC inspection of Solent Grange in 2014 the Trust was made aware of the issues raised by the CQC and the decision by Solent Grange to stop admissions to the home.

“In making plans for winter 2014/15 the Trust, supported by the Island’s System Resilience Group (SRG), developed plans for a 13 bed step down community facility for patients who no longer need to be in hospital but do need a level of support not available in nursing homes on the Island. A search across the Island identified the vacant first floor at Solent Grange as the only space large enough to accommodate the new unit.

“Poppy Unit opened on 26th January and is expected to close after Easter when it is hoped that the current pressures on health services will have eased.

“The Unit, which is completely separate from the nursing home operation at Solent Grange, is staffed by Trust employees led by a Charge Nurse with local GPs providing medical cover.

“The Unit receives its supplies via the Trust and operates under Trust policies. The Unit is registered separately with the CQC as part of the Trust’s registration of services.”
