Tidal energy tower

You DO need to provide a reason – not just yes/no – on Tidal Energy plans, MMO now claim

After spending getting on for ten minutes on a telephone call with an officer from the Marine Management Organisation yesterday (Wednesday), OnTheWight ran an article about a licence application for the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC).

The officer was very clear and specific that residents could give a simple Yes or No response on the application by Friday, with more detailed comment to follow later.

Unfortunately it’s come to light from another part of the MMO that this information was not only misleading, but totally inaccurate.

For this reason, we’re amending sections of the previously published article and for the avoidance of doubt, publish this clarification from the MMO below.

People who want to put forward their views on the application from Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre Limited (PTEC) should do so by emailing [email protected] before midnight on Friday 20 February 2015.

They should include the reasoning and rationale for their views in their consultation response. The application (ref: MLA/2014/000563) can be accessed via the MMO Public Register.

The MMO received the application from PTEC on 29 November 2014 and a public consultation was opened on 23 December 2014. The consultation is in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.

A MMO spokesperson said:

“We want to ensure that people provide their views and we encourage them to complete the consultation documents by the closing date.

“Following the consultation process, we will consider any representations received and ensure any outstanding matters are addressed before making a decision. We aim to determine marine licence applications with 13 weeks.”

PTEC has applied to the Marine Management Organisation and Isle of Wight Council (as the local planning authority).
