Rugby: Players remember former player Martin Poynter

Thanks to Nolan for sharing this latest report from the Ventnor RFC. Ed

Chineham 1st XV 29-10 Ventnor 1st XV
Ventnor travelled to Chineham this week for a game that could possibly decide which team gets promotion this season. It was played on a pitch that was more mud than grass and the referee having to find spots of field playable for a scrum at a break down.

The first half saw glimpses of great attacking rugby from Ventnor trying to bring in a new style of play but Chineham a defence held strong and the Islanders unable to score any points in the half. It was one way traffic with Chineham using the hill to their advantage and run in two converted tries.

The second half again saw Ventnor trying to break down the Chineham defence and we’re playing some good rugby with the ball in hand. Ventnor’s captain and leading try scorer, Todd Riches, finally able to crash through and put some points on the board for the visiting side. With Fergus Kenny converting as well as kicking a penalty to give them 10 points. Chineham scored the remainder of their points by running in three more tries in the second half. A hard defeat to take for the Ventnor squad.

In memory of former player
The start of the game saw a minute’s silence from both teams in memory of exVentnor player Martin Poynter who sadly passed away in the week prior to the game.

A further minute silence will be held before the forth coming home tie against Alresford on 7 March and anyone wishing to show their respect is welcome to join us.
