The Department for Education has issued data from Ofsted today, showing the most recent overall effectiveness for schools and academies across London and the South East of England (including the Isle of Wight).
The data is based on inspections that took place between 1 October and 31 December 2014. The table below gives a comparison between the Isle of Wight and other areas in London and the South East.
Tale of two stories
They reveal that out of the 50 schools inspected during the period, the Isle of Wight had two ‘Outstanding’ schools (Northwood Primary and Bembridge CE Primary), 31 ‘Good’, ten that ‘Required Improvement’ and seven rated ‘Inadequate’.
In percentage terms, this puts the Isle of Wight higher than the England (61%) and South East (60%) averages with 62% of ‘Good’ schools on the Isle of Wight.
However, we find the percentage of ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Inadequate’ schools at the wrong end of the charts. The Isle of Wight has the lowest percentage of ‘Outstanding’ schools (4%) and the highest percentage of ‘Inadequate’ schools (14%).
The 4% ‘Outstanding’ schools percentage is just over half of the next lowest in Portsmouth and Medway (9%).
