Southern Vectis is to start its open-top Shanklin Steamer bus route from Good Friday 3 April – after learning of problems with the town’s famous lift.

The bus operator has been working with Isle of Wight Council to introduce the service, which will transport local people and visitors from the town to Shanklin seafront and Esplanade.

Matt Kitchin, general manager of Southern Vectis, said,

“The lift carries thousands of people each year to the beach and businesses on the Esplanade here in Shanklin – and we were concerned to learn that it was pulled from service just as the summer season begins.

“We are pleased to be running the service as a trial until Sunday 12 April – but this may be extended if it is well-received.”
