Hospice signing group

Improve your health and well-being through singing lessons

This in from the Hospice, in their own words. Ed

The singing groups, which are part of a six week trial, are free to attend and run weekly on a Friday morning in the John Cheverton Centre between 11am – 12 noon.

Open to all
The light-hearted, informal sessions are open to everyone, not just patients attending the Hospice, and no prior experience of singing is necessary.

The sessions are run by Sandy Kealty, a highly experienced community music specialist from the Island charity Independent Arts, who use creative arts as a tool to help improve the health and wellbeing of people in the community.

Sandy said:

“There is nothing like singing for generating that feel good factor and it’s a wonderful way for people to express themselves, have fun, build their confidence and enjoy some social interaction. But, as well as the emotional and social benefits, singing can also have many health benefits. As an aerobic activity it is linked to stress reduction, longevity and better overall health. It can also help manage breathing problems which in turn can help improve cardiovascular efficiency.”

Expanding programme of social activities
Pauline Hull, John Cheverton Centre Coordinator said:

“This is a fantastic new addition to our expanding programme of social activities here at the centre, which are all designed to help improve overall health and wellbeing. In our first week of the trial we had twelve people attending the singing sessions including patients, staff and volunteers, who all seemed to feel very uplifted by their experience and we could hear lots of laughter not to mention some very good harmonies resounding around the building.

“We have a huge range of different activities that people can get involved in from yoga to arts and crafts. Most of these are provided free of charge but we always appreciate donations towards our running costs. We’ve also got our own cafe in the centre too so if people want to come early for a coffee and cake or stay for a spot of lunch, then they would be most welcome.”
