Southern Vectis is announcing changes to its bus fares and ticketing for children and young adults.
From August 2015, the operator is making its popular smartcard – the key – available as a ticketing option.
If you’re under 18, register for the Key
Matt Kitchin, general manager of Southern Vectis, said,
“We are inviting under 18s to register for the key next month.
“The card will double-up as a form of ID for students travelling by bus – and young people will be able to buy tickets on the key from 30 August, in time for the new school and college term.
“This is the first time smartcard ticketing has been available for this age group. It makes paying for bus travel safe and secure – so we are delighted to be among the first to introduce it for our young customers.
“Anyone wishing to register can do so online southernvectis.thekey.co.uk by entering their name, date of birth, address, email address and uploading a passport photo.
“Three working days later, they should visit Newport Bus Station with ID – such as a passport or birth certificate – to verify their age. Our team will then issue them with their discount ID card.
“For those who prefer to pay the driver with cash, this facility is still available – although it is far less secure than paying online.”
Discounts remain the same
Despite Isle of Wight Council withdrawing subsidies for those aged 16 and over travelling between home and school, Southern Vectis is continuing to offer discounted travel.
Matt added,
“These are difficult times, both for us as bus operators and for the local authorities in which we serve.
“However, we will still be providing young people between 16 and 18 with a discount of 25 percent. And anyone who is under 16 will continue to receive 50 percent off adult prices.”
