Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September see the return of Ventnor Film Society with another programme of acclaimed British and World Cinema.

The Society continues to meet in Ventnor Arts Club, and due to increased demand, we are now screening each film on two nights. We have put together an interesting programme of recent award winning films from the UK, Mauritania, France, Sweden, Argentina and USA. This season has a good mix of thrillers, drama, comedy and documentary, in English and in the original languages with subtitles.

Wild Tales start the season
Starting the season is Argentina’s Wild Tales, a sharp and very black comedy, made up of six stories of murder and mayhem that show what can happen when the injustices of everyday life just get too much.

In tales of poison, road rage, a wedding from hell, a hit and run and an unfair parking ticket, events escalate into destruction on a catastrophic scale.

Award-winning Whiplash
Scooping awards from around the film festivals, our next film is Whiplash, the story of an ambitious young jazz drummer and his relationship with his terrifyingly harsh teacher.

The pace never lets up in an emotional story that sees the desire to achieve perfection turn to an obsession that threatens his sanity.

From Timbuktu to Wales
Beautifully filmed in the desert landscape of Mauritania, Timbuktu tells the story of a cattle herder’s clash with the foreign Jihadis who have taken over the nearby town.

Dark Horse is a docudrama set in a poor Welsh village where the locals breed a Grand National winning racehorse against the odds.

French favourites
French films are always popular with our audience and Before The Winter Chill stars Daniel Auteuil and Kristin Scott Thomas in a slow-burning thriller where a successful neurosurgeon’s perfect world comes under threat.

In contrast, Girlhood is set in a Parisian sink estate where a young black girl searches for her identity by joining a feisty girl gang.

Having a laugh
From Sweden come Force Majeure, a wickedly funny psychodrama about the fallout from a moment of panic on a family ski holiday in the Alps and the absurdist comedy A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence.
