As winter draws in, here’s why it’s important to have lights on your bike (video)

It was still pitch black at 6.45 this morning and as the evenings are drawing in, if you’re a cyclist, now, more than ever, is the time to make sure your bicycle lights are charged and working properly.

No better an illustration of why bicycle lights are crucial was captured on video at the weekend by Fay Woodford.

Her dash-cam filmed a cyclist on a very dark Isle of Wight road without any lights at all on their bike.

The unlit cyclist
Fay shared the video with OnTheWight saying,

“It angered me.

“If I hadn’t flipped up my lights I wouldn’t’ve known he was there.”

If you cycle without lights, not only are you potentially putting your own life at risk, but also that of others who may need to swerve suddenly, when they finally see you at close distance.

The video
Here’s what Fay’s dash-cam captured.

Blink and you’ll miss them (as might a driver not paying 100% attention to the road), but the unlit cyclist who was on the other side of the road comes into view at ten seconds into the video.
