Town councillors call for u-turn on u-turn decision

Four East Cowes Town councillors, Morris Barton, Mike Lloyd, Stephen Hendry and Luisa Hillard have come together to support a motion calling on the town council to reverse a previously-made decision.

As reported earlier in the week, in April this year the East Cowes town council (ECTC) voted to support an application for Bathing Water Designation in East Cowes.

Support rescinded
However, in July, when several town council members were absent from the meeting, the decision was reversed, with the ECTC voting to “resolutely decline to take on any other responsibility in relation to this matter”.

Residents, who have spent the summer months conducting surveys and preparing for the application, were, not surprisingly, up in arms about the decision and attempted to have it discussed at the September meeting. According to those present at the meeting, the clerk refused to allow discussion and residents left the meeting very unhappy.

Motion to rescind the decision
The rescission motion should now allow the subject to be discussed at the town council before the application deadline.

Although the clerk has already published the agenda for next week’s ECTC meeting – the legal timings of which are being disputed – Cllr Hillard told OnTheWight,

“We believe that the deadline for submission, according to our Standing Orders, is close of business today (Wednesday).

“The Notice has been emailed to her and all other councillors, including the Mayor, and a hard copy has been delivered to the Town Hall.

“We therefore hope and expect that this will be added to the agenda.”

Details of the notice of rescission are set out below. Click on the full screen icon to see larger version.
