Sandown Rivoli

Plans to demolish former Rivoli Cinema recommended for refusal

Isle of Wight planning officers have recommended an application to demolish the former Rivoli Cinema (most recently, a costume workshop) in Sandown be rejected by the Planning Committee.

The Committee are due to consider the planning application on Tuesday (20th October). Although the application is supported by the local ward member, but officers state

The proposal would result in the unjustified loss of a non-designated heritage asset, which makes a significant positive contribution to the character and appearance of the Sandown Conservation Area and local distinctiveness. Without robust justification as to why the existing building cannot be adapted to an alternative use, it is considered that the loss of the existing building would fail to comply with the aims of policy DM11 (Historic and Built Environment) of the Island Plan Core Strategy, which seek to conserve and enhance the Island’s historic and built environment.

The Planning Committee meeting is open to members of the public and is held at County Hall, Newport from 4pm on Tuesday 20th October.

You can see the application details on the council’s Website.
