Job ads for Amey ‘waste contract’ staff cause upset following redundancies

Last week OnTheWight reported on redundancies being made by Amey, the new waste contractor, for operatives working at the recycling plant, which has now closed whilst a new one is planned and built.

Concern over job ads
Several readers have been in touch concerned about job ads appearing online for what seemed like the same jobs the staff were being made redundant from.

As you can imagine, seeing those jobs advertised online was less than helpful for the families of those having to take redundancy a month before Christmas.

We got in touch with Amey to find out what was happening.

Adhoc, temporary cover during holiday or sickness
A spokesperson from Amey told OnTheWight,

“Amey is not recruiting for or intending to permanently fill any roles which have been the subject of a redundancy.

“We are responsible for providing a consistent and effective service on the Isle of Wight and – as with any contract of this type – we work with recruitment agencies who are able to provide us with adhoc, temporary cover during holiday or sickness periods. This allows us to continue daily collections without any disruption to residents.”

Advert placed by agency
They went on to explain,

“The advert is question has been placed by an agency, who will provide us with such temporary cover as and when required during periods of leave or sickness. The roles advertised are not full time, permanent roles within Amey.”

Confirming that all full time jobs had been offered to those from the recycling plant, they finished by saying,

“As we have said previously, we will always look at alternative employment within Amey to minimise potential redundancies for employees where possible and we’re committed to creating and supporting local jobs.

“All full time vacancies have been shared with employees that are at risk of redundancy and we are still in consultation with these employees.”
