Whether it’s walking, running, cycling or swimming, you will find something to suit your ability and goals at the West Wight Sports and Community Centre. 1st January saw the launch of their biggest ever programme of sporting events.

Range of events
It all kicks off in May with the hugely popular Needles Half Marathon. This is followed by the Solent Swim and Needles Swim in the summer, the return of the West Wight Triathlon in September and finishing the year with the Chilly Hilly XC race.

Young athletes have not been forgotten with the Junior Needles Fun Run and the new Splash and Dash event in July.

However for those looking for a challenge that will push them to their physical and mental limits, the Centre are looking for members of the community to join staff as they take on the 3 Peaks Challenge, where you’ll be tackling Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike all in 24 hours.

Key fundraising opportunities
Centre Manager Clare Griffin says,

“Our sports events are a key fundraising opportunity for the Centre, and in 2015 our Solent Swim and Needles Swim raised more than £40,000 for the Centre, which is fantastic.

“However for 2016 we’ll also be fundraising to install a climbing wall in the Centre. The project will cost around £40,000, and we’re aiming for the 3 Peaks Challenge to raise £10,000 of this. We’re hoping we’ll get people from all different backgrounds and fitness levels joining us. We’ve devised a training programme, and will be offering help and support for those who sign up. It’s definitely going to be a team effort.”

More information about all the sports events can be found on the West Wight Sports and Community Centre Website.
