Book now for An Audience with Shurl

It’s National Storytelling Week (30th Jan to 6th Feb), so what better time to introduce Ryde School’s latest Artist-in-Residence, Sue Bevan (theatre-maker/writer).

sue bevan green topAfter a long and successful career mostly teaching and lecturing in Economics in Cambridge, Sue is now making the transition to full-time artist, starting here on the Isle of Wight.

An Audience with Shurl
Her first solo show, An Audience with Shurl, was nominated for the Outstanding Performance Award at Prague Fringe and received four-star reviews at Edinburgh.

This week sees a chance to catch Sue performing her award-winning show at the Ryde School Theatre.

In telling one woman’s story this semi-autobiographical piece speaks to everyone’s experience.

Tragic, warm and funny in equal parts, our Shurl sees parallels between her own life and that of the woman she believes can save her – local-girl-made-good, international superstar Dame Shirley Bassey!

Escaping the trauma of losing her child to adoption, for thirty years Shurl follows Dame Shirley around the globe, ‘washing glasses, scrubbing floors, waitressing…anything to be beside the great lady.’ But when finally the two women come face-to-face, our Shurl has to confront some home truths.

Sue’s published memoir accompanies the show.
