Come rain or shine, 43 young children from Lanesend Primary School, Cowes were determined to walk the mile or so to Cowes Lifeboat Station today (Wednesday).
Their expedition across the town was eventually rewarded with some engaging talks from members of the station’s enthusiastic visits team, keen to convey life-saving messages about tides, beach safety and life-jackets.
The children, aged four and five from two reception classes, also had a close-up look at the station’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Sheena Louise.
Lifeboat visits officer Penny Maclean said,
“The range of messages and activities that we can now offer people of all ages is so diverse because of the large range of skills possessed by visits team members recruited over the last year.
“And we specifically tailored the content of our activities for this particular visit to part of the school curriculum relating to ‘space and time’.”
It was the second such visit made by children from Lanesend Primary, and the eight volunteers of the visits team on duty do not expect it will be the last. This, despite the fact that some of the children walking back to school had to endure a wind-driven hail-storm.
